How to use not equals in sql query

First of all let me tell you i am just a beginner in sql. Now, I am in a condition of applying not equals in a sql query. I want to select only that records where class not equals to 5th. How to write sql query for this condition.

Your sql query will be like :
select * from table_name where class <> '5th'

You can use <> for not equals in a sql query.
